چکیده

Astrophysical observations originate from matter that interacts with radiation or transported particles. We develop a pragmatic approximation in order to enable multi-dimensional simulations with basic spectral radiative transfer when the available computational resources are not sufficient to solve the complete Boltzmann transport equation. The distribution function of the transported particles is decomposed into a trapped particle component and a streaming particle component. Their separate evolution equations are coupled by a source term that converts trapped particles into streaming particles. We determine this source term by requiring the correct diffusion limit for the evolution of the trapped particle component. For a smooth transition to the free streaming regime, this ’diffusion source’ is limited by the matter emissivity. The resulting streaming particle emission rates are integrated over space to obtain the streaming particle flux. Finally, a geometric estimate of the flux factor is used to convert the particle flux to the streaming particle density, which enters the evaluation of streaming particle-matter interactions. The efficiency of the scheme results from the freedom to use different approximations for each particle component. In supernovae, for example, reactions with trapped particles on fast time scales establish equilibria that reduce the number of primitive variables required to evolve the trapped particle component. On the other hand, a stationary-state approximation considerably facilitates the treatment of the streaming particle component. Different approximations may apply in applications to stellar atmospheres, star formation, or cosmological radiative transfer. We compare the isotropic diffusion source approximation with Boltzmann neutrino transport of electron flavour neutrinos in spherically symmetric supernova models and find good agreement. An extension of the scheme to the multi-dimensional case is also discussed. Subject headings: supernovae: general—neutrinos—radiative transfer—hydrodynamics– -methods: numerical

Derivation of the Isotropic Diffusion Source Approximation (IDSA) for Supernova Neutrino Transport by Asymptotic Expansions

We present Chapman–Enskog and Hilbert expansions applied to the O(v/c) Boltzmann equation for the radiative transfer of neutrinos in core-collapse supernovae. Based on the Legendre expansion of the scattering kernel for the collision integral truncated after the second term, we derive the diffusion limit for the Boltzmann equation by truncation of Chapman–Enskog or Hilbert expansions with react...

Simulations of Stellar Core Collapse, Bounce, and Postbounce Evolution with Boltzmann Neutrino Transport, and Implications for the Core Collapse Supernova Mechanism

In this paper, we present results from a simulation of stellar core collapse, bounce, and postbounce evolution with Boltzmann neutrino transport. We motivate the development of our Boltzmann solver in light of the sensitivity of the neutrino-heating core collapse supernova paradigm to details in the neutrino transport, particularly near the neutrinospheres, where the neutrinos are neither diffu...

Simulations of Core Collapse Supernovae in One and Two Dimensions Using Multigroup Neutrino Transport

Current supernova modeling revolves around the idea that the stalled supernova shock is reenergized by absorption of electron neutrinos and antineutrinos on the shock-liberated nucleons behind it. Key to this process is the neutrino transport in the critical semitransparent region encompassing the neutrinospheres. Potentially aiding this process is convection below the neutrinospheres and the s...

A Comparison of Boltzmann and Multigroup Flux-Limited Diffusion Neutrino Transport During the Postbounce Shock Reheating Phase in Core Collapse Supernovae

We compare Newtonian three-flavor multigroup Boltzmann (MGBT) and (Bruenn’s) multigroup flux-limited diffusion (MGFLD) neutrino transport in postbounce core collapse supernova environments. We focus our study on quantities central to the postbounce neutrino heating mechanism for reviving the stalled shock. Stationary–state three–flavor neutrino distributions are developed in thermally and hydro...
